As spotted by The Gamer, multiple MultiVersus players have now reported seeing Rick show up in their matchmaking lobbies recently. To frame the situation, MultiVersus has 2v2 multiplayer and between matches players wait in a lobby. In this lobby, players can see which character their teammate selected as the avatar is displayed on-screen. It’s here where the Rick glitch is happening. Seemingly at random, players’ teammates will look as if they selected Rick as their fighter. They haven’t, but the menu still shows Rick.

This isn’t altogether an unknown bug. It’s a known issue that sometimes teammates will display as a character that they haven’t selected. Harley Quinn is specifically shown often, even when she hasn’t been picked. The reason why has never been confirmed, nor has the bug been fixed. It’s possible that this is the same glitch, only now it’s showing Rick instead. There is likely some sort of incorrect reference in the code that is displaying Rick’s character information instead of the right pick.
What’s particularly interesting about Rick’s sudden MultiVersus appearances is that it indicates Rick is currently in the game but disabled from normal access. There are even some leaks of Rick being played by dataminers. It’s not necessarily surprising that Rick is ready to go, despite being months out from release. Live service games frequently load up finished content to be rolled out over time. It is, at least, indicative of Rick being seen as a valuable character for drawing interest to MultiVersus post-launch, though.
Unfortunately, while Rick’s appearances in-game may seem to imply otherwise, there’s no indication that the new fighter will be released anytime sooner than previously announced. Rick is planned to follow the release of Morty. Morty will arrive on August 9, and Rick will follow later in Season 1.
Rick and Morty will be the third and fourth additions to MultiVersus’ roster. The first was Iron Giant, who was released alongside the start of the Open Beta’s early access. The second was LeBron James, added to MultiVersus just this past week when the Open Beta began. Odds are even more characters will be added before the end of the year, and many more in 2023 and beyond.
MultiVersus is available now in Open Beta on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
