Because of his variety of unique mechanics in MultiVersus, from Grenades to summoning Rick’s Ship and more, Morty’s best Perks are unpredictable. So, let’s go over the best selection found for this Bruiser-type character so far and why these Perks were picked.

Best Perk Setup

First off, let’s lay out what the current “meta” Perk Build for Morty is in Season 1:

Signature Perk: I’m More Than Just A Hammer Offense: Ice To Beat You Offense: Make it Rain Dog Utility: Coffeezilla

Now, at a glance, this Perk layout makes Morty look like a purely projectile-based character, but that’s actually not the case. As a Bruiser-Class character, Morty is in the thick of it quite a bit, it’s just that his best “tools” are his projectiles, and these Perks help make them even better. Plus, let’s be honest, Morty’s hitbox isn’t exactly “perfect” at the moment either.

I’m More Than Just A Hammer

Now, as of writing this, Morty hasn’t been out very long, so it’s hard to say with 100 percent confidence which Signature Perk of Morty’s is “the best.” But, even this early, players are still positive that it’s a competition between I’m More Than Just A Hammer, and Oh That’s Still A Grenade. Morty’s third Signature, Extra Fleeb Juice, is basically useless as it currently stands, though it does have some interesting mechanics tied to it that could become worthwhile with some adjustments.

Meanwhile, I’m More Than Just A Hammer changes Morty’s Side+Attack into a spinning nightmare comparable to something like Finn’s Backpack Attack. It’s great for making a lasting hitbox in the middle of the stage during a Teams match, even if it leaves Morty exposed.

That said, the only reason the Hammer-based Signature Perk is winning out over Oh That’s Still A Grenade is that Morty’s Passive ability, Sci-Fi Explosive Technology, is currently disabled. When this Passive is eventually activated in a future update, Morty’s Grenades will become a lot scarier. But, in the current version, I’m More Than Just A Hammer is the more popular pick.

Ice To Beat You

Anytime the Ice to Beat You Perk is brought up, a similar Perk, That’s Flammable Doc, is usually also mentioned. It’s always “either-or” with these two Perks, and it depends on personal preference and overall playstyle for which one should be equipped across the entire roster.

That’s Flammable Doc is a great Perk for aggressive-type players who want to steadily build up damage percentage over time, while Ice to Beat You is great for players who want to slow down their opponent just a tad so that their moves connect easier. And, with how slow to wind up and telegraphed Morty’s attacks are, Ice to Beat You seems to be the better choice. Plus, he actually has more projectiles than one would expect with Aw Jeez Snakes, his Grenades, and Power of Earth, so he can trigger this Perk constantly.

Make It Rain, Dog

Since Morty’s Grenades are such a crucial part of his kit and will become even more important once his Passive is implemented, it seems obvious that the Perks that influence how easy these Grenades are used and thrown would be part of his best build. Make it Rain Dog, quite simply, makes it easier for Morty to chuck Grenades and set them up around the arena.

Additionally, it makes it quicker to aim Power of Earth, and it’s harder for enemies to react to Aw Jeez Snakes. Granted, if Morty is on a team with a character who has little to no Projectiles, it makes much more sense to run something like Slippery Customer instead, but more often than not, Make it Rain Dog is the right choice.

Coffeezilla

Coffeezilla is basically a permanent Perk slot on Morty, just like it is on characters like Bugs Bunny or Velma. This Perk gives a Passive 10 percent reduced Cooldown to all of Morty’s abilities, of which he has a lot. Just to make it clear, Coffeezilla affects a ton of his moves, such as:

Temporal Back Up Uh, Auto Pilot Another Portal? It’s A Grenade, I Think Both versions of Aw Jeez, Snakes

So, even if Morty players want to switch out a Perk for another one to counter-build a specific matchup, it’s very rare that they’ll switch out Coffeezilla.

Alternate Perk Options

Of course, it’s still very early for Morty, and players are absolutely still figuring him out. And, as the meta evolves and people really hone down what attacks of Morty’s are the absolute best, his Perk setup might change. With that in mind, here are some alternate options for players who weren’t the most jazzed about the Best Perk Recommendation above or just want some options for counter-picking enemy teams:

Disclaimer: (O) = Offense Perks, (D) = Defense Perks, and (U) = Utility Perks.

(O) Deadshot: A good choice for Morty, considering how many projectiles he has. (O) Hit Em’ While They’re Down: An option for those who prefer to use Morty’s Power of Earth a good amount as it applies a Weakened effect. (O) I’ll Take That: Another option for players utilizing Power of Earth well, and one that helps Morty’s Cooldowns as well. (O) Lumpy Space Punch: A Perk that’s pretty much guaranteed to be useful on any character, considering how much the combat in this game takes place in the air. (O) Snowball Effect: A good option for those who feel confident in their skill or those who play Morty a bit more at range rather than up close. (O) That’s Flammable Doc: Mentioned in the reasoning for Ice To Beat You, basically just a nice way to build constant damage with Projectiles. (D) Toon Elasticity: A nice survival-based option against characters who spike opponents into the ground often, like Bugs Bunny or Tom and Jerry. (D) Absorb N’ Go: A great counter-Perk pick against a Projectile heavy Velma team as it rewards Morty for getting hit with quicker Cooldowns. (D) Boundless Energy: This choice lets players chase more often without running out of Dash meter too quickly. (D) School Me Once: The standard counter-pick against a Projectile-based team. (D) Slippery Customer: Gives Morty a bit of an easier window for dodging attacks, which is useful given how long his windups are. (U) Gravity Manipulation: Morty’s Armothy Assault is a great move, but it has a bit of a longer windup compared to something like Bugs Bunny’s spike move. With this, it becomes easier to hit with Armothy or set up for Power of Fire. (U) I Dodge You Dodge We Dodge: Gives Morty more Cooldown reduction just for dodging well. (U) Last Stand: Morty is actually a pretty heavy character, at least at the moment, so he’ll usually last until reaching 100+ damage which makes this Perk worth using. (U) Retaliation-Ready: Great choice for Teams, especially if Morty’s ally is another Projectile-based character like Reindog. (U) Tasmanian Trigonometry: Gives Morty more survivability against heavy hitter characters who like to Ringout at low percentages. (U) Triple Jump: This Perk is fantastic on just about every character in the roster, and it allows Morty a bit of a safer recovery as well as an easier time chasing off-stage.
