While viewers were able to enjoy plenty of great comic book-related content in 2022, there were a few offerings that shot above the rest with undeniable gusto. The movies are one thing, but superhero shows have been enjoying a bit of a renaissance lately, at least from a certain point of view. Sure, the CW may have axed most of its still pretty excellent DC series, but that possibly helped pave the way for other platforms to have a fair crack at it without getting viewers burnt out too quickly. At least, that was probably the idea.

Among the new and returning superhero shows in 2022, Rotten Tomatoes officially ranked Ms. Marvel as the champ. The film and TV review aggregator site even added a little blurb explaining their conclusion. “The MCU grew by Moon Knight, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and even Werewolf by Night in 2022, but it was season 1 of Ms. Marvel, about a Pakistani-American superhero and led by charming star Iman Vellani, that bested them all. Move over, Peacemaker, and The Boys need to stand aside, because this teen crime-fighter is riding a wave to the top of the genre.”
Tatiana Maslany’s similarly excellent She-Hulk: Attorney at Law took their second-place spot, with the site’s blurb praising how the legal comedy “passes the bar for bingeworthy viewing.” Meanwhile, number 5 saw Marvel Studios’ Oscar Isaac-led Moon Knight settle into a “mostly enjoyable – and refreshingly weird – spot in the MCU firmament.” However, 2 out of 5 places showcased a DC show and another with a more loose affiliation.
Prime Video’s The Boys enjoyed 3rd place, with its 3rd season lauded by Rotten Tomatoes for being “both bracingly visceral and wickedly smart.” Finally, HBO Max’s surprisingly incredible James Gunn series Peacemaker took number 4. “John Cena’s still in solid form in Peacemaker,” the site gushed, “leading a bloody good time that gives writer-director James Gunn full permission to let his freak flag fly.” It’s not difficult to see why each of these shows was chosen. Granted, there probably weren’t all that many to choose from, but even so.
Because the art of making television is subjective by its very nature, many viewers will disagree with these rankings. As unambiguously fantastic as Ms. Marvel is, it may not have affected some viewers as much as Peacemaker. Meanwhile, others might have enjoyed She-Hulk more. But while the rankings could be up for debate, everyone deserves a spot here.
Ms. Marvel is now available on Disney Plus.
