Creating his channel in 2010 and primarily using it to upload videos of himself playing iconic horror games such as Outlast and Silent Hill, Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg quickly rose to prominence and, by late 2013, had become the most-subscribed channel on the platform. Felix would defend this title for over five years before being toppled by T-Series following a well-documented rivalry which ended with the Indian record company usurping him for the title of most-subscribed channel on the platform. Despite this, PewDiePie has remained the most-subscribed channel run by an individual, and the fourth-largest overall. However, all is set to change very soon.

MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, originally gained fans through a series in which he poked fun at poorly-designed YouTube intros. After surpassing 30,000 subscribers in 2016, the next year saw Jimmy’s channel explode in popularity following several outlandish stunts. As the MrBeast channel grew in size over the next five years, the scale of the stunts did too, with Jimmy recreating the set and games of Squid Game for a 2021 video.

Currently holding several records, such as most subscribers gained in a month and most subscribers gained in a minute, all evidence suggests that the MrBeast channel will soon hold the record for most-subscribed channel run by an individual. At the time of writing, Jimmy’s channel sits at 110.9 million subscribers, while the PewDiePie channel sits precariously atop it with 111.8 million. With a 900-thousand subscriber difference and MrBeast averaging one million new subscribers every five days while the relaxed upload schedule of PewDiePie has led to him sitting at 111 million for weeks, it is just a matter of time until MrBeast becomes the most-subscribed channel run by an individual in the history of the platform.

With MrBeast having supported PewDiePie in his 2018 battle against T-Series for the title of most-subscribed channel, purchasing billboards calling for people to subscribe to the Swede, it is almost poetic for MrBeast to be the one to surpass Felix several years later. With the MrBeast channel set to become the most-subscribed on the platform in a matter of hours, fans are left wondering what Jimmy himself will do to commemorate the occasion.
