“Apu Trilogy,” by Satyajit Ray, for its humanity.
“Breathless,” by Jean-Luc Godard, for its poetry.
“Vertigo,” by Alfred Hitchcock, for its sensuality.
“Springtime in a Small Town,” by Fei Mu, for its poignancy.
“Early Autumn,” by Japan’s Yasujiro Ozu, for its humor and wisdom.
A classic film you’re embarrassed you haven’t seen: “Deep Throat.” I never got the chance to see it because it was banned in Hong Kong when I was a teenager. By the time I could get my hands on it, it was considered passé.
A much-recommended film you’ve resisted seeing: Andy Warhol’s “Sleep.” The entire film shows a guy sleeping for five hours. I guess my resistance is self-explanatory.
A film you’d want your kids to watch: “Fist of Fury.” As a teenager, I was exhilarated by it. It looks dated now, but Bruce Lee still kicks ass.
